Hugh, with his wife Elizabeth, has been involved with breeding and exhibiting Labradors under the Gunnislake prefix since 1964. They have owned or bred 41 Australian Champions and have had outstanding successes at All Breeds Shows, Royal Shows and Breed Specialty shows. Hugh commenced judging in 1969 and obtained his All Breeds Licence in 1992. He has judged extensively in all States of Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, Korea, the United Kingdom and Japan. Hugh has been President of the Australian National Kennel Council since 1998 and was the Australian Delegate to the FCI Congress in Dortmund in May 2003 and to the Conference of Commonwealth Kennel Clubs in London 2008. He represents the ANKC on the Australian Companion Animal Council He was a Director of the Royal NSW Canine Council from 1988-2003 and Chairman of the Board from 1994-1997. In 2004 he was awarded Life Membership for his long service to the Council and dog fraternity. He is currently the Chairman of the Dogs NSW Conformation Judges Training Committee. In 2006 Hugh was awarded a Medal in the Order of Australia (OAM) for canine activities, in particular to the Australian National Kennel Council and the Royal NSW Canine Council. He is the Captain of the Theresa Park Rural Fire Brigade and was recently awarded the RFS 20 years Long Service Medal.
